Island

Easton, 1897

(Heb. i, "dry land," as opposed to water) occurs in its usual signification (Isaiah 42:4, Isaiah 42:10, Isaiah 42:12, Isaiah 42:15, comp. Jeremiah 47:4), but more frequently simply denotes a maritime region or sea-coast (Isaiah 20:6, R.V.," coastland;" Isaiah 23:2, Isaiah 23:6; Jeremiah 2:10; Ezekiel 27:6, Ezekiel 27:7). (See CHITTIM.) The shores of the Mediterranean are called the "islands of the sea" (Isaiah 11:11), or the "isles of the Gentiles" (Genesis 10:5), and sometimes simply "isles" (Psalms 72:10); Ezekiel 26:15, Ezekiel 26:18; Ezekiel 27:3, Ezekiel 27:35; Daniel 11:18).
