Marriage

Bible-based prayers for “Marriage”, to read or listen to.

A patient and faithful love

Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;

God of love, thank you for my marriage. You joined us together, and you want our love to reflect yours. Teach me to love with patience and tenderness, and to be the first to honor my spouse. Help me forgive mistakes, seek my spouse's good before my own and not get irritated over small things. Guard our faithfulness in our thoughts, in our glances and in our decisions. May we choose to love each other anew every day, even when we don't feel anything special. May our home speak of you without the need for words. In the name of Jesus. Amen.

Romans 12:10

A marriage in crisis

A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.

God who renews hearts, my marriage is going through a desert. There are wounds, distance and conversations that end badly. Sometimes I feel there is nothing left to do. But you can change a heart of stone into a heart of flesh. I ask you to give us a new heart. Heal what time and mistakes have broken. Give us humility to admit our faults and courage to seek help, whether from a pastor or a trusted counselor. If there is danger or abuse, give me clarity to protect myself. Renew the love that once united us. In the name of Jesus. Amen.

Ezekiel 36:26

Forgiving each other as spouses

And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.

Merciful Father, you forgave me far more than I could ever forgive. Today I ask for your help to forgive my spouse and also to ask for forgiveness. There are offenses that still hurt me and pride that keeps me from taking the first step. Soften my heart. Let me not use the past as a weapon or quietly hold grudges. Teach us to speak honestly and to listen to each other without constantly defending ourselves. Give us a fervent love, which covers a multitude of faults and joins what has been separated. Before we sleep, may we be at peace with each other and with you. In the name of Jesus. Amen.

1 Peter 4:8

While I wait to marry

The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him. It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD.

Lord, I place in your hands my desire to get married. You know my heart and how much I long to share my life with someone. There are hopeful days and impatient days. You are good to those who wait for you; teach me to wait calmly and to seek you first. Keep me from hasty decisions and from relationships that would lead me away from your path. If it is your will that I marry, prepare me to love with maturity and faithfulness, and prepare that person as well. In the meantime, help me live this season with purpose, serving others and growing in faith. I entrust my way to you. In the name of Jesus. Amen.

Lamentations 3:25-26

On our anniversary

Set me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave: the coals thereof are coals of fire, which hath a most vehement flame. Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it: if a man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly be contemned.

Eternal God, today we celebrate another year of marriage and we come to thank you. We remember the day we promised each other our love, and everything we have lived through since then: joys, trials, changes and surprises. You have been with us at every stage. Thank you that our love has not gone out, even when difficult waters came. Forgive us for the times we neglected each other. Renew our vows today and make our love deeper and more tender with the years. May we keep walking together and with you. In the name of Jesus. Amen.

Song of Solomon 8:6-7

God at the center

Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up. Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone? And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

Our God, thank you that in marriage we do not walk alone. When one falls, the other can lift them up; when one is cold, the other gives warmth. We ask you to be the center of our union, the thread that keeps us strong. Let us not compete with each other, but work as a team. Help us care for each other in sickness, in weariness and under the pressures of life. May we pray together often and seek your direction in every decision. Then our cord will be hard to break. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
