When the money isn't enough
Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
Heavenly Father, this month the numbers don't add up. I look at what I have and what I need to pay, and the worry keeps me awake. You know what I need before I ask you. I ask you for daily bread for me and my family. Give me ideas, work and open doors, and the humility to accept help if I need it. Help me seek your kingdom first, without letting anxiety rule my days. Teach me to trust you today, without already carrying tomorrow's worries. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears. They looked unto him, and were lightened: and their faces were not ashamed. This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.
God who hears the poor, my debts are overwhelming me. Sometimes I feel ashamed and don't know where to begin. Like the psalmist, I cry out to you and ask you to deliver me from this distress and from all my fears. Give me courage to face my numbers honestly and make a realistic plan. Help me keep my commitments with integrity and not take on more debt on impulse. Put wise people in my path who can guide me. Soften the hearts of those I owe. And while I get out of this step by step, guard my peace and my family's. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
Yea, the sparrow hath found an house, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, even thine altars, O LORD of hosts, my King, and my God.
God of my refuge, you give the sparrow a home and the swallow a nest. Today I speak to you about my need for housing. I am looking for a place to live, or I'm afraid of losing the one I have, and the uncertainty troubles me. You know every street and every door. Guide me to a home I can afford, where there is peace and rest. Give me wisdom to sign fair agreements and honest people to deal with. If I have to wait, give me patience and shelter in the meantime. And wherever I live, may my home be a place open to your presence. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.
Generous Father, I live surrounded by messages telling me I need more to be happy. I confess that sometimes I compare, envy and desire what I don't have. Remind me that I brought nothing into this world and will take nothing out of it. Teach me to give thanks for the food and shelter you give me today. Free my heart from the love of money. And make me generous: may I share with joy, without calculating so much what I give. I want to live with open hands, to receive from you and to give to others. Thank you that in you I have what truly matters. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much.
Lord of all that exists, what I have comes from you, whether much or little, and I want to be faithful with it. Teach me to manage my money, my time and my resources well. Help me spend wisely, save when I can and tell the difference between what I need and what I merely want. Give me discipline to keep clear accounts and honesty in every payment. Keep me from impulse buying and from promises of easy money. May I learn to be responsible in the small things of each day. And may the way I handle material things show that I trust in you. Through Jesus Christ, my Lord. Amen.
But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.
Father of the poor, today I am not praying for myself, but for those who are going through hard times. I think of families who can't make ends meet, of people without work, without a home or without enough food. You see them and you love them. Provide for them what they need. And don't let me pray with words alone: open my eyes to see the need near me and open my hands to share. Show me how to help with what I have, even if it is little. May your church be a place where no one feels abandoned. May our love be seen in our deeds. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
