In the midst of chaos
Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.
God of peace, my life is full of noise and hurry. There are too many things at once, and I feel everything slipping through my fingers. Your Word invites me to be still and know that you are God. Today I want to stop for a moment and turn my mind toward you. I don't ask you to make everything around me disappear, but to be the firm center in the middle of it all. Put my priorities in order, help me do one thing at a time and let go of what isn't mine to carry. May my trust in you be stronger than the disorder. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
Return unto thy rest, O my soul; for the LORD hath dealt bountifully with thee.
Good Father, I come to you with a worn-out soul. It isn't just physical tiredness; it is a weight I have been carrying inside for a long time. Your Word invites my soul to return to its rest, because you have dealt bountifully with me. Here I am, coming back to you. I hand over to you the burdens that were never mine. Teach me to walk by your side, unhurried and with humility. Take from me the demand to do everything perfectly and to carry everything. May your peace take the place of my anxieties. Give me deep rest, the kind only you can give. Through Jesus Christ, my Lord. Amen.
Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
Beloved Father, I confess that I often live comparing myself with others and wanting what I don't have. That restlessness robs me of peace and keeps me from enjoying what you have already given me. Your Word invites me to be content with what I have, because you have promised never to leave me or forsake me. That is my greatest treasure: your faithful companionship. Free me from greed and from always craving more. Open my eyes to see your everyday gifts: bread, a roof over my head, the people who love me, the air I breathe. Teach me to live simply and gratefully. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him.
Holy Father, today I want to be quiet for a moment before you. My mind talks nonstop, and it is almost always me who fills my prayer with words. Now I say to my soul: rest in God alone, for your hope comes from him. I quiet my hurry, my lists and my complaints. I want to listen to you. Speak to my heart through your Word and your Spirit. If I hear nothing in particular, may this silence still be an encounter with you. Teach me to find a quiet place every day to be alone with you. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.
Merciful Lord, there are memories from my past that still hurt and haunt me: mistakes I made, words I said, things that were done to me. Sometimes I go back to them again and again. Today I give them to you. Thank you that in Christ there is forgiveness for what I did and healing for what I suffered. Your Word tells me not to dwell on the past, because you are doing a new thing. Make a way in my wilderness and bring forth rivers where today there is only dryness. Help me forgive myself as you forgive me. If I need to ask forgiveness or talk to someone who can help me heal, give me courage. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.
Lord, you see the tensions in my relationships. There is a person I find it hard to talk to, and the distance between us robs me of peace. Your Word asks me, as far as it depends on me, to live at peace with everyone. Show me what my part is. Give me humility to admit my faults, courage to take the first step and prudence to choose my words well. Heal what is wounded in me and in the other person. And if reconciliation isn't possible right now, guard my heart from resentment and help me leave the outcome in your hands. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
