Prayer

Loneliness

Bible-based prayers for “Loneliness”, to read or listen to.

When I feel alone

Turn thee unto me, and have mercy upon me; for I am desolate and afflicted.

Lord, today loneliness weighs on me more than usual. The house is silent and no one calls. Like the psalmist, I tell you that I am lonely and afflicted, and I ask you to look on me with mercy. You don't go away when others aren't here. Remind me that your presence fills this place and that my life is precious to you. Give me peace for tonight and courage to look for someone to talk to tomorrow. Open my eyes to the people you place near me. In the name of Jesus. Amen.

Psalms 25:16

Far from my homeland

He doth execute the judgment of the fatherless and widow, and loveth the stranger, in giving him food and raiment. Love ye therefore the stranger: for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt.

Father, I am far from my homeland, and sometimes I feel like a foreigner everywhere. I miss my family, my language, the flavors and the streets of my childhood. Your word says that you love the foreigner and give him food and clothing. Thank you for not looking at me as a stranger. Take care of my loved ones who are far away, and comfort my heart when homesickness tightens its grip. Help me put down roots here without forgetting where I come from, and put good people in my path who will welcome me. I ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Deuteronomy 10:18-19

Be with me in old age

And even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you.

Faithful God, my years have gone by and many of those I loved are no longer here. The days are long, and sometimes I feel the world has forgotten me. But you promised to carry me even to old age and gray hairs. You made me and you still carry me. Take from me the sadness of feeling like a burden. Give me joy in small things: a visit, a phone call, an honest conversation. And as long as I have strength, teach me to pray for others and to keep giving love. In the name of Jesus. Amen.

Isaiah 46:4

After a breakup

He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.

Merciful Father, a relationship that was important to me has ended, and I feel an emptiness I don't know how to fill. The memories hurt and it is hard to imagine the future. You heal the brokenhearted and bind up their wounds. Lay your hand on this wound. Free me from resentment and also from guilt that isn't mine to carry. Help me grieve what I need to grieve and not make decisions out of pain. Surround me with friends who will stand by me, and remind me that my worth does not depend on someone staying by my side. In the name of Jesus. Amen.

Psalms 147:3

Alone in a crowd

Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.

God who knows me, I am surrounded by people and still I feel alone. I talk, I smile and I work, but no one seems to really know what I carry inside. Jesus too was left alone by his friends, and even so he said he was not alone, because you were with him. Give me that same certainty. You know me completely and you love me. Help me open my heart wisely to someone I trust and stop hiding behind a smile. And may I also learn to notice others who feel the same way. In the name of Jesus. Amen.

John 16:32

A family in faith

God setteth the solitary in families: he bringeth out those which are bound with chains: but the rebellious dwell in a dry land.

Good God, you set the lonely in families. I ask you to do that in my life. I need true friends and a community where I can grow, serve and be known. Lead me to a church where your love is lived out, and give me the courage to take the first step: to say hello, accept an invitation or go back even if it is hard at first. Take away my fear of rejection. And when I find that place, make me a good friend to others, someone who listens and walks alongside. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
